hi this is Anita with Five Minutes with
0:10
Art Today we're going to talk a little
0:12
bit about one of the most famous art
0:14
movements around is impressionism and
0:17
why is impressionism such an important
0:20
art movement well first of all let's
0:22
talk about what is impressionism
0:25
Impressionism is a style of painting
0:28
that emerged in France in the 1860s
0:31
and 1870s It was defined by visible
0:34
brush strokes light focus color everyday
0:38
subjects outdoor settings which is you
0:40
know a planer uh painting it was called
0:44
So it wasn't realistic at all It was
0:46
more you know type of artwork which in
0:48
some ways can almost be a little bit
0:49
hazy It could maybe you know seem a
0:52
little bit hazy with some of the brush
0:53
strokes Why was it revolutionary why was
0:56
it such an important art movement
0:59
the reason is because during that time
1:01
the the French Academy favored
1:03
historical mythological subjects They
1:06
you know they want perfect realistic
1:08
techniques dark muted color palettes and
1:11
smooth and visible brush strokes So
1:13
these artists that were painting
1:15
impressionism were really breaking away
1:18
from what would even be sold during the
1:20
day or what people would show during the
1:22
day which was you know this realistic
1:25
sort of dark muted type of art
1:27
Impressionists they rejected all of that
1:29
You know they believed in real life not
1:31
gods or heroes They had loose sort of
1:34
sketchy strokes They had bright vibrant
1:37
colors They had outdoor scenes and they
1:40
had ordinary people doing ordinary
1:43
And this type of art was actually very
1:45
shocking um during this time You know a
1:49
lot of the critiques said things about
1:50
them like the impressionist artists were
1:53
lazy they were amateur and they were
1:56
even disrespectful to the art and art
1:58
world itself But the revolution wasn't
2:01
just a style it was an attitude So the
2:03
impressionists then started to exhibit
2:05
outside of the the convention They they
2:08
began to exhibit themselves They took
2:10
art to the streets and to the
2:12
countryside They documented modern life
2:15
as it happened And they made art for
2:16
art's sake not for institutions In other
2:19
words they are people who broke the
2:22
rules and started a movement that
2:25
changed art forever That is something
2:27
that I really love about the
2:28
impressionism movement is these artists
2:31
were doing art because they loved art
2:34
They weren't doing art because that's
2:36
what sold They were doing impressionist
2:39
art because that's what they loved and
2:42
that's what they wanted to do The core
2:44
techniques of impressionism is is the
2:47
use of light over details They had
2:50
visible brush strokes They wanted to see
2:52
the brush strokes you know the strokes
2:53
of the brush on the painting They
2:56
painted outdoors and you know this is
2:58
one of the new things to be able to take
2:59
it outdoors and be able to paint it
3:01
outdoors And with that you know became
3:03
things like the invention of the easel
3:05
where they could bring it outdoors and
3:06
some of the tubes of paint that they
3:08
could bring outdoors So they'd bring it
3:10
outdoors and they look at light and they
3:11
look at nature and they look at everyday
3:13
life They focus on everyday life and
3:15
everyday people They you know painted
3:18
cafes streets gardens and friends
3:23
So some of the most famous impressionist
3:25
artists would be of course Claude Monae
3:28
would be considered one of the most
3:29
famous Pierre August Renoir is is
3:32
another one Edgar de Gos is one Bertha
3:37
Amorisat is another These are some of
3:39
the very famous artists and they're the
3:42
artists that that changed art forever He
3:44
knows that you know Berto Morsad is a
3:46
woman that's there that um there were
3:48
several women that were well-known also
3:50
impressionist artists uh during this
3:53
time frame So I have written a blog post
3:55
on this if you'd be interested we can
3:57
put it into the description entitled
4:00
what is impressionism and why was it
4:02
revolutionary and on there there's also
4:04
some questions that we've have some
4:05
frequently asked questions that we
4:07
answer try to answer about impressionism
4:09
and why impressionism art you know was
4:13
such an important art movement you know
4:15
one reason why is impressionism so
4:17
popular today and I think one of the
4:19
reasons is because it feels alive and
4:21
emotional and accessible you know the
4:24
colors are beautiful the scenes are
4:25
familiar and the mood is uplifting and I
4:28
think that's one reason why many people
4:29
today still resonate with impressionist
4:31
art Just to clarify a few things there
4:34
is a difference between impressionism
4:35
and postimpressionism And the reason I
4:37
didn't list Vincent Van Gogh is because
4:39
Vincent Van Go is considered a
4:42
not an impressionist Even though he knew
4:44
the impressionist and the impressionism
4:46
his type of art was considered to be
4:48
after impressionism art which is
4:50
postimpressionism We've hope that you've
