hi this is Anita from Five Minutes with
0:10
Art You know one of the stories that's
0:12
often told about the painter Vincent Van
0:14
Gogh is that he only sold one paint in
0:17
his lifetime Vincent Van Go did die
0:20
broke and he died without really seeing
0:25
how popular he is today He really only
0:28
sold one painting though there has been
0:30
a record showing of another one of his
0:32
paintings going to London and I don't
0:35
know if that was before or after he
0:36
passed away But the art world you know
0:39
generally believes that he just sold one
0:42
painting He gave us starry night He gave
0:44
us sunflowers He gave us a bedroom Died
0:47
thinking he was a failure You know think
0:50
about that for a moment Here's one of
0:51
the greatest artists that's ever lived
0:54
And if you if I mentioned several times
0:56
if you do a search on Google if you did
0:58
a search on Google trends of you know
1:00
popular artists Vincent go usually
1:03
always comes up in the top you know one
1:06
or two or three artists you know So but
1:08
he really only sold one painting the red
1:11
vineyard and even then he sold it to a
1:14
friend So it wasn't even sold to
1:16
somebody walked off the street and said
1:17
"I love your artwork I want to buy it."
1:20
It basically was sold to a friend
1:23
another artist a Belgium artist on a
1:25
book that she uh was the one who bought
1:28
his painting She bought it for 400
1:30
Franks about a,000 to$2,000 US in
1:34
today's money Think about that for a
1:36
moment So she bought it but it was you
1:38
know not a very expensive painting And
1:40
she more or less almost like she was
1:42
doing him a favor I'm going to buy one
1:44
of your paintings And this is now
1:46
displayed in a museum in Moscow
1:51
There's some debate that Vincent Ming go
1:53
he did trade some of his paintings for
1:55
other people's paintings There was some
1:57
debate about that But really when it
2:00
comes to like earning money on it
2:02
probably more more was just one painting
2:04
that was actually sold Why did he sell
2:07
so little well there's a couple reasons
2:08
why One he was very much ahead of his
2:10
time you know in in the art world If he
2:13
had lived longer maybe he would have
2:15
seen success later in his life
2:18
He was constantly moving He was moving
2:20
to different places He was you know
2:22
lived in Netherlands Belgium Paris
2:24
Ariles you know he he was moving all
2:26
over France And so you know he was
2:29
constantly moving He didn't really have
2:30
a you know stable place so much He was
2:33
you know in an asylum half the time
2:35
painting So you know he wasn't really
2:37
out there He had no real commercial
2:39
representation even though his brother
2:40
Theo did represent him Um he didn't have
2:43
dealers actively seeking his work His
2:45
brother Theo an art dealer in Paris
2:47
tried to promote him But it was tough It
2:49
was you know very hard for Theo to
2:51
promote him But Theo believed in him and
2:54
kept helping him with finances but he
2:57
harder for him to sell his work and to
2:58
promote it Vince Go was very socially
3:01
isolated He had mental illness He didn't
3:04
have many stable relationships He you
3:06
know he alienated people He was probably
3:09
one of these sort of odd ducks that
3:11
people thought who is this guy in the
3:13
neighborhood you know we don't want to
3:14
be around him And then on top of that he
3:17
cut off his ear and handed his ear to a
3:20
a prostitute in a brothel and they had
3:22
to call the police on him So you know
3:25
people were probably saying "Who's this
3:27
weirdo that cut off his own ear?" He had
3:30
a very short-lived career He started
3:33
painting seriously at 27 and he died by
3:36
37 So he only really was painting
3:38
seriously for 10 years Vincent Go felt
3:41
like he was being overlooked He felt
3:42
like people didn't appreciate his art
3:45
but he kept painting anyway And that's
3:47
one reason what I really love about
3:48
Vincent Van Gogh is if any of you out
3:50
there are artists you know maybe you
3:52
feel that way People don't appreciate
3:54
your art They don't understand you Or
3:56
maybe there's something else in your
3:57
life that they don't understand or you
3:59
feel like you're just not understood If
4:01
you can remember the story of Vincent
4:03
Van Gogh I think we can all learn from
4:05
this story that here's a man that was
4:07
very very misunderstood in his world
4:11
that he you know they people just didn't
4:13
understand him They didn't know who he
4:14
was He was kind of the weirdo um you
4:16
know down the street But yet he turned
4:19
out to be one of the greatest artist who
4:22
ever lived and today has a museum in
4:26
Amsterdam dedicated to him But not only
4:29
that is I think everyone knows his name
4:31
I remember when I grew up and the one of
4:34
the sunflower paintings my mother had a
4:36
copy of it that was you know hanging in
4:38
our kitchen It was a you know very
4:40
popular painting during that time and I
4:43
think a lot of people loved his art They
4:45
saw his art They felt something when
4:48
they saw his art I love Vincent Van Go
4:50
He's definitely one of my favorite
4:52
painters if not my most favorite painter
4:54
And the more I get to know him and his
4:56
story the more I learned to appreciate
4:59
him and just all he endured and all he
5:02
went through in his life We hope that if
5:04
you're interested in this we will put in
5:05
our description a link to our blog post
5:07
entitled "Why did Van Gogh only sell one
5:10
painting in his lifetime?" And this
5:12
might give you a couple ideas as to why
5:14
he only sold one painting in his
5:16
lifetime and maybe give you some food
5:18
for thought for yourself and your own
5:20
life And what does this mean for you
5:22
because really art is not just about
5:24
viewing the paintings It's about making
5:26
art be part of who you are And it's
5:29
maybe in seeing yourself and the world
5:31
and those around you in a different way
5:34
as you view art That is the power of art
5:38
