Was Frida Kahlo A Surrealist  Artist?  

Frida Kahlo had a life that was filled with pain and suffering.  She painted her personal pain and suffering in her paintings.

Surrealist Art 

" a style of art and literature developed principally in the 20th century, stressing the subconscious or nonrational significance of imagery arrived at by automatism or the exploitation of chance effects, unexpected juxtapositions, etc.” - Dictionary.com

In 1938, the  French writer, poet and head of the surrealist movement Andre Breton came to Mexico.  He saw Frida Kahlo's art work and immediately labeled it as Surrealist artwork.  

But,  Frida Kahlo never considered her artwork to be surrealist as she felt she was painting her own reality and not her dreams.
