This scene that he saw before him in these early hours of the morning and into the night must have made an impression on Vincent Van Gogh.
This painting was painted in 1889 when Van Gogh was staying at the Saint-Remy-de-Provence asylum. In June of 1889, he wrote this in a letter to his brother Theo:
“At last I have a landscape with olive trees, and also a new study of a starry sky.”

How The Starry Night Original Painting Ended Up In New York
About six months after Vincent Van Gogh died, his brother Theo died. Theo left behind his wife Jo and their only son Vincent Willem. Theo had inherited all of Vincent Van Gogh’s artwork upon his death, so when Theo died, his wife, Jo, inherited the artwork.
Jo understood the power of Vincent Van Gogh’s artwork. She was also a knowledgeable art collector and businesswoman. She knew to establish Vincent van Gogh in the art world. She needs to sell Vincent Van Gogh’s works of art to art collectors in museums worldwide.
Jo sold The Starry Night to Georgette van Stolk, who lived in Rotterdam; in 1941, the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York bought the painting from her. Since then, The Starry Night has been one of the critical paintings at the MoMA in New York.

Many feel this painting had hidden meanings, as 1888 marked the beginning of his mental illness that would plague him until he died in 1890. The Starry Night was painted when he was in the mental asylum and struggled with his mental illness.
