Differences Rembrandt From Claude Monet And Pierre Auguste Renoir
One of the most obvious differences is between Rembrandt, Claude Monet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Here are some of the differences between Rembrandt and these two Impressionism artists:
Rembrandt Lived In Holland In The 17th Century
Rembrandt lived in the 17th Century. He was born in 1606 and died in 1669. Rembrandt spent his entire life living and working and Holland.
He never went to Italy to study art but did all his art training in Holland.
Rembrandt lived long before Claude Monet or Pierre- Auguste Renoir lived. Both Monet and Renoir painted in France, but Rembrandt painted in Holland.
Rembrandt Was A Dutch Golden Age Baroque Painter
Rembrandt and Monet, and Renoir were not in the same art movement. Rembrandt is considered part of the Dutch Golden Age painters of the Baroque movement.
The Baroque style is the art movement that dominated Europe from 1600 to 1750. But this period was long before Monet or Renoir painted in the 19th and even early 20th Centuries.
Rembrandt Is Considered One Of The Great Visual Artists
Rembrandt is considered one of the great visual artists in art history. He was considered an innovative and prolific master in three media, including painting, printmaking, and draughtsman.
Unlike many Impressionism painters, Rembrandt did not paint outdoors but painted indoors. He was known to paint a lot of portraits, self-portraits, and scenes from Biblical life. Rembrandt was known to paint a lot of different types of scenes, even scenes from outdoor life.
Rembrandt Used Chiaroscuro Or Light And Dark
In his paintings, Rembrandt used chiaroscuro, the Italian word for dark and light, or the strong contrasts between light and dark. Using light and dark contrast, the artist achieved a three-dimensional object and figure that came off the canvas.
For both Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, being Impressionists, the light was also important to them, but not in the same way that light and dark were important to Rembrandt. For the Impressionists, the light was essential, but how the light reflected off objects during certain times of the day was important.
The impressions loved to capture the light, especially in the twilight or early evening shadows when the light was the most dramatic.
As you can see from this that there are many differences between Rembrandt, Claude Monet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The artists lived in very different times, and their styles and type of art were very different.
Differences Between Claude Monet And Pierre-Auguste Renoir
As both Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir are considered Impressionism painters, their differences are not as great as those between Rembrandt and the Impressionists.
But there are some differences between the Impressionists Claude Monet and Pierre August Renoir. Here are some of the major differences between Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir:
Monet And Renoir Had Different Styles
Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir had different artistic styles. Monet had what can be considered a looser kind of style, while Renoir had a more controlled style.
They both used a lot of soft colors in their work and broad strokes, but even with those similarities, Monet’s and Renoir’s pieces and art styles are so different they could never be mistaken for each other.
Monet And Renoir’s Paintings Had Different Focuses
One of the major differences between Renoir and Monet is that their artistic focus was very different. Renoir was known to focus more on people in his paintings, while Monet painted more landscapes.
Their differences in art also showed in their personalities. Monet was very focused on light and emotion in his work. He painted a lot outdoors and showed through his paintings how the light affected the scene he was painting.
On the other hand, Renoir makes the people the focal point of his work. Nowhere is this shown more than in the painting La Grenouillere or The Frog Pond.
Monet And Renoir And La Grenouillere Or The Frog Pond
During the summer of 1869, Monet and Renoir were starving artists. They were both barely making enough to survive and feed their families.
The two artists formed a friendship on and off the canvas. Also, at this time, they both lived near each other and regularly painted together in an area known as La Grenouillere or The Frog Pond.
In these two paintings, we can see the distinct differences between the artistic style of these two men.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1869, La Grenouillere Or The Frog Pond
In Renoir’s painting, you can see the main focus of his people huddled together on the pond’s shores. His paintings focus on the people and the pond’s shoreline.
In this work, Renoir was experimenting with little patches or spots. He would apply one mark next to another to create subtle color variations. You can also see some bright white patches suggesting water movement.
Claude Monet, 1869, La Grenouillere Or The Frog Pond
Claude Monet also painted the Frog Pond, but you can see that his painting focuses more on the boats, the pond, and not the people. For Monet, in this painting, was experimenting with new ways to show the reflection of water.
He used huge brush strokes of white, brown, and blue to show the huge reflection of water. These patches of color also showed some movement in the water.
As you can see from this that Monet and Renoir were both Impressionist artists, and some of their techniques were similar, but their styles and execution were different. On the other hand, Rembrandt was a very different kind of artist from Monet and Renoir, but he also lived and painted in a very different time from the Impressionism movement.
