Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the all-time greatest artists. He is one of the most famous artists in the world.
Vincent van Gogh is famous because he was an artist who had his own individualistic and personal style. He used colors with unique brushstrokes and used contoured forms. He was a prolific artist that only created art for ten short years. Van Gogh did not see a lot of success in his lifetime.
We owe the fact that we know about him and his paintings because of his sister-in-law Jo Van Gogh- Bonger. After Vincent’s death, Jo actively sought ways to ensure that Van Gogh’s artistic legacy not be forgotten.
Vincent van Gogh and His Works of Art
Van Gogh is so famous because he was indeed a fantastic artist. He had his unique style; he created very striking and vivid paintings. He used individualistic brushstrokes and forms he used in his artwork.
Van Gogh was not an artist for very long. He worked full-time as an artist for ten years of his life. For those ten years, he lived in poverty and suffered from mental illness.
In the short 1ten years that Van Gogh was a full-time artist, he accomplished a lot. He spent a lot of time emphasizing drawing and then watercolors. After perfecting his drawing, he added color to his paintings. Van Gogh believed the foundation of art was drawing.
Van Gogh would seek out other artists and seek to learn from them; even though he was pretty much self-taught, he did all he could to learn and master his art.
Van Gogh was not afraid to experiment with his art. He was an artist that genuinely experimented with color, brushstrokes, techniques, and everything he could think of. He did not follow what others did at that time, but instead, he experimented with his art.
Van Gogh was fully aware that his painting approach and style were unique for his period. He knew that he had an individualistic approach to painting on the canvas.
Van Gogh wanted to form a group of artists to help each other and build each other up while exploring different paintings in style. For a short time, he worked with the post-impressionist painter Gauguin, but this lasted a few months as they were both temperamental and had opposing artistic ideas.
Because of the emotional strain of all of his relationship with Gauguin, Van Gogh was supposedly chasing Gauguin around with a razor. Then Van Gogh cut off his ear and delivered it to a prostitute. Van Gogh was an artistic genius who suffered from many mental health issues.
Vincent van Gogh did not see much success for his artwork during his lifetime. He only sold one painting.
Jo Van Gogh-Bonger – Theo’s Widow
When Vincent van Gogh died, no one knew about him and his paintings. Because we know about him and his artwork today, we must credit Joe van Gogh-Bonger, his brother Theos widow.
Six months after Vincent van Gogh died, so did his brother Theo. Vincent was very close to his brother Theo, and Theo was a great supporter of Vincent.
At this time, his sister-in-law Jo was only 28 years old and left as a widow with a young son named Vincent. She had the tiny Paris apartment full of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings.
Jo returned to live in Holland and opened a guest house where many artists and writers frequented. She learned about the art world from them. Jo started to find a way to get Van Gogh’s paintings out into the world.
Due to her very organized and savvy business mind, we know of Vincent van Gogh today. She organized exhibitions, found the right people to purchase his paintings, and even published the letters between Vincent and Theo.
Thanks to Jo, we know so much about Vincent Van Gogh, his brother Theo and Van Gogh’s paintings.
Vincent van Gogh was so famous because he truly is an artist with an individualistic style. Despite the fact he was not with us for a long time, he left a great legacy of art that many artists still emulated today. But it is really to the credit of his sister-in-law Jo that we know so much about him and his paintings today.

I know that Vincent van Gogh influences my art. I love his choice of colors, style, and how he uses the paints and puts the paint on canvas. I genuinely admire him for the great gift of art that he has given us.
I am also genuinely grateful for Jo, the sister-in-law of Vincent van Gogh because she did not just throw the paintings away but instead actively worked to find a way to ensure that Vincent van Gogh had the remarkable legacy that he deserves. We owe a lot to Jo for all she did for Vincent van Gogh and how this allows us today to continue to be able to see and learn from his art.
