John Constable’s Art Mediums
John Constable mastered several art mediums, including oil paintings, watercolors, and pencil sketches. John Constable’s different types of artistic techniques were an essential part of his overall creative process, and this helped him to become one of the great masters of painting.
Using all of these techniques helps him to be able to show the glory of the English countryside in a way that no other artist was able to show it. He would often paint the same scene but show different weather patterns for that scene.
Today this gives us a unique perspective. of not only what the area and landscape looked like during his lifetime but also what the weather patterns looked like.
John Constable Sketched Out His Paintings Before Doing The Oils
John Constable is best known for his landscapes, mainly in oil colors. But at the core of his artistry were the pencil sketches he used for his ideas before he developed them into his oil paintings.
When he lived, the only way he could capture the landscape as he saw it was first to capture it on paper and then go home to paint it. He lived before the time when artists, such as the impressionist artist, painted, en Plein art or painting outside.
Because of this, we have some magnificent sketches he used to paint the scene before the final oil painting was produced. Many of these pencil sketches show his skill at sketching, especially using pencils.
He produced such exciting pieces as “The White Horse” (1819-20) and “Leaping Horses” (1825).
John Constable And Watercolors
Besides his pencil sketches, John Constable frequently used watercolors in his artwork. Many of these watercolors are magnificent works of art, so they should not be overlooked.
John Constable’s watercolors, such as “The Opening of Waterloo Bridge” (1832), which depicted London’s new bridge, are magnificent works of art.
The watercolors allowed him to sometimes bring his watercolors outside and paint precisely as he saw the scene. He was known to go outside with his paper and watercolors, even in a storm, and paint the weather pattern as he saw it.

His landscapes also have this incredible capacity to show natural appearances such as weather patterns and other changes in the weather or the landscape itself. John’s Constable was known to study some weather patterns and be fascinated by them; this would come out in many of his paintings. That is why he is often known for his beautiful paintings of the clouds and sky.
What continues to make many of John Constable’s paintings so unique is that many were creatively and quickly executed; the colors were brushed on the canvas with enthusiasm and wet paint onto the wet paint.
